URGENT: Statement regarding the arrest of Human activist: Ramy Kamil
Our colleague Ramy Kamil has been arrested.
In the early hours of November 23, security forces knocked loudly on the door of Ramy’s home in Cairo, where he lives with his sisters.
They said they were looking for Ramy and did not identify themselves or present an arrest warrant. Four plainclothes security officers entered the apartment, while a number of uniformed, armed security forces waited outside.
The officers detained Ramy, confiscating his laptop, as well as his sister’s, and taking a number of documents related to his work such as Property contracts and some of his books from his bookshelf. They didn’t allow him to bring his medications as Ramy got Asthma.
Earlier this month, security forces approached Ramy’s building three separate times in a single night and questioned the neighbors about Ramy’s apartment, his sister and his work nature.
Ramy is 34 years old and has been working as a Coptic activist and he is the Founder of Maspero’s Youth Association.
We hold Egyptian authorities responsible for his safety and well being and call for his immediate and unconditional release .
